RECAP | Otters unlucky in pitcher's dual
EVANSVILLE, IN - The Evansville Otters dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker Saturday night at Bosse Field to the Joliet Slammers in extra innings. There was dominant pitching for both sides, with limited offense late in the game, but the Slammers (3-5) edged the Otters (3-6) to even the series.
Johan Castillo put together 6.1 shutout innings of near perfection. The southpaw darted the strike zone and although he only struck out one, he surrendered no walks with five hits in the no-contest outing.
Scoring began in the eighth inning when Joliet found the first run on a sacrifice fly to jump ahead 1-0.
Evansville tied the game in the bottom of the ninth to force extras. With a 3-2 count and two outs in the inning, Austin Bost lined a single into right field, scoring Bryan Rosario, who ran for Jomar Reyes.
Moving to extra play, with one out in the top of the 10th inning, an error from Randy Bednar in right field allowed the inherited commissioner’s runner to take an extra base, crossing the plate and giving the Slammers a 2-1 lead.
The Otters had a runner on third with one out in the bottom of the frame, but left him stranded to end the game.
Offensively, the bats racked up four hits. Riley Delgado was the only Otter to reach base multiple times.
Evansville’s aims for the series victory tomorrow against Joliet. Closing out their six-game home stand, the Otters and Slammers conclude the series at 12:35 p.m. CT.
The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions.
