RECAP | Otters rally ends short to Slammers

Evansville, Ind. – The Evansville Otters moved the walk-off run to scoring position in the ninth inning but lost the series finale to the Joliet Slammers 5-4 on Thursday evening at Bosse Field.

The Otters trailed 5-3 entering the ninth. Dakota Phillips sparked the rally with a double to left. Justin Felix followed with a single and Austin Bost batted home Phillips to cut the lead in half.

Evansville then loaded the bases with two outs with the tying run at third base and the game winning run at second base. A strikeout ended the ballgame.

Phillips led the Otters’ offense with two doubles, raising his season total to a Frontier League leading 30 doubles on the year. He extended his on-base streak to 14 games.

Jomar Reyes hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Otters an early lead.

The Slammers tied the game with three runs in the third inning on four singles and an error.

Joliet took the lead in the sixth with a leadoff solo home run. Two singles and an RBI double scored the eventual game winning run.

Parker Brahms pitched 3.2 dominant innings in relief for the Otters. He struck out five batters and retired all 11 batters he faced out of the bullpen.

Zach Smith allowed four earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched in his start and suffered the loss.

Evansville’s magic number to make the 2023 Frontier League playoffs remains at five with 10 games left to play on the season.
