RECAP | Davis drives in three as Otters defeat Y'alls

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - J.R. Davis brought in a trio of runs Friday night as the Evansville Otters defeated the Florence Y'alls 4-2 in a rain-shortened eight-inning game.

Both squads had multiple quality chances early, but the game remained scoreless into the third.

With a runner on third and one out, Davis kicked off the game's scoring with an RBI fielder's choice to second.

Two innings later, Davis added a second RBI with a sacrifice fly, giving the Otters a 2-0 lead.

Justin Watland, the reigning Frontier League Pitcher of the Week, continued to dominate on the mound in the middle innings as the game entered the seventh.

In the bottom half, the Otters added a third run on another RBI fielder's choice by Davis.

The offensive hold ended for Florence in the eighth, capitalizing on a one-out walk and a stolen base. Ray Zuberer drove in the Y'alls' first run with an RBI double one batter later. Later in the inning, Alberti Chavez doubled the Florence run total with an RBI double.

Florence's eighth inning ended there and the tide turned back to Evansville.

The Otters grabbed a run of insurance in the bottom of the eighth, as George Callil turned a hit by pitch and stolen base into a run thanks to back-to-back passed balls.

As the game entered the ninth, the contest was put on hold due to rain. After a 43-minute delay, the game was declared a final score, Evansville taking the game, 4-2.

Justin Watland earned the win going 7.1 innings, with two runs on three hits. Jeremy Ovalle received the loss in his 2022 debut. Jacob Bowles earned his first save of the year in relief.

Evansville's win was their 10th in their last 11 games and is now tied for first in the West Division.
