RECAP | Otters back up Gossmann for series win at Gateway
6/5/2022
SAUGET, Ill. - The Evansville Otters earned their third series win of the year with a come-from-behind 4-2 win at Gateway on Sunday evening.
Evansville's starting pitcher Austin Gossmann struggled to start off, walking the opening two batters for Gateway. The Grizzlies went on to capitalize in the opening inning off a two-run double from Peter Zimmermann.
The Otters soon responded in support of Gossmann in the third, finding the hit and run column. Zach Biermann continued his strong weekend series, scoring two on single to right.
One batter later, Jeffery Baez picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, giving the Otters a 3-2 lead.
In the top half of the fifth, Biermann struck again. Earning his third RBI of the game, Biermann sent a double to right to bring the advantage to 4-2.
The score would stay steady to the end, following solid innings from Joe Riley and Logan Sawyer in the eighth and ninth respectively.
The win went to Gossmann, his first of the year. He allowed two runs on three hits across seven innings of work. The loss was credited to Brendan Feldmann, his second loss of the season.
Sawyer worked for his league-leading sixth save of the year, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
The win marks the third series win of the year for Evansville, their first road series win. They are off to a 5-1 start in West Division play and now sit at one game back of the lead in the Frontier League West.
Next up for the Otters is a six-game homestand, leading off with a midweek series with Windy City. First pitch from Bosse Field is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday night, a Taco Tuesday at the ballpark with discounted Corona and Modelo.
The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions.
