RECAP | Otters shut out Boomers, win season series
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (56-36) turned the tables and shut out the Schaumburg Boomers (51-41) in the series finale on Thursday night, 3-0.
Colby Morse made his first start against Schaumburg, facing Cole Zaffiro making his first start against Evansville.
The Otters would bring a run home in the first inning on an RBI single from Blake Robertson.
That would be the only run scored while both starting pitchers were in the game, as Zaffiro and Morse dueled throughout the first six innings. Morse finished with his sixth quality start of the season, going six scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
With Zaffiro out of the game for the seventh inning, the Otters immediately took advantage, scoring two runs on a Jon Ponder RBI single and an Amani Jones sacrifice fly.
The Evansville bullpen threw three scoreless innings, one each from Joe Morrissey, Alex Valdez and Junior Cerda. Cerda would toss another 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his 19th save of the season, tying him with Aidan McEvoy for the Frontier League lead.
Evansville is now 57-36, taking the season-series against the Boomers 5-4. They are now five games ahead of the Y’alls for the first Wild Card spot with Florence’s loss against Lake Erie. With the Otters' win, their magic number to clinch a spot in the 2026 Frontier League Playoffs drops to three with nine games remaining. That could drop to two if Windy City loses tonight's game with Mississippi.
The Otters start their last home series of the regular season tomorrow against the Lake Erie Crushers at 6:35 p.m. CT at EVSC’s Historic Bosse Field.
