RECAP | Eight-run seventh leads Otters to series sweep
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (56-34) used a big-time seventh inning to come back from down five runs and sweep the Florence Y’alls (50-39) on Sunday afternoon, 11-8.
Joan Gonzalez made his second start for the Otters in 2026 against Evan Webster, who was pitching against Evansville for the first time since Opening Day.
Florence would strike first with a two-run single in the first inning, but the Otters tied the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Marcos Gonzalez and an RBI single by Blake Robertson.
Both teams traded solo home runs in the fourth inning before Florence took the lead in the fifth.
They extended the lead in the seventh inning, bringing four runs in on a bases-loaded walk and bases-clearing double to make it 8-3.
The Otters' offense exploded in the bottom half, scoring eight runs for only the second time this season to come back from down five and make it 11-8. Everybody in the lineup reached base in the inning, 13 batters coming to the plate overall with Y’alls pitching issuing free passes to six of them.
Nate Wohlgemuth and Joe Morrissey were given the eighth and ninth innings and managed to hold the Florence offense silent to clinch the weekend sweep.
Eight of the nine Otters in the lineup finished the game with hits. Despite not picking up a hit, Mark Black still contributed to the big offensive game, drawing two walks and scoring a run. LG Castillo brought in three runs in the finale, while Sam Linscott also had a multi-RBI day.
Evansville is now 56-34, finishing 9-3 against Florence this season and 6-0 at home. They are now 5.5 games ahead of the Y’alls for the first Wild Card spot and only two games behind Washington in the Central Division race. With the Otters' win and Windy City’s loss, their magic number to clinch a spot in the 2026 Frontier League Playoffs dropped to four.
Evansville has an off-day tomorrow before continuing the playoff push with a weekday series in Schaumburg against the Boomers starting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Wintrust Field.
