RECAP | Simpson leads Otters to series clinching win
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (53-33) took game two and the series on the road against the Washington Wild Things (56-30) on Wednesday night, 6-3.
Garret Simpson made his first start against Washington since mid-May against Kenton Egbert, who was making his third start for the Wild Things this season.
The Otters brought a run home in the first inning for the third straight game, Logan Brown’s opposite-field double bringing home Jon Ponder from third base.
After making it 2-0 in the fourth, Evansville put the game even more out of reach in the sixth inning. Mark Black hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Blake Robertson and T.J. Salvaggio doubled in Chris Kwitzer to double the lead.
Marcos Gonzalez hit his 11th home run of the season in the seventh inning to make it 6-0.
On the pitching side, Simpson had one of his best outings of the season, finishing with six scoreless innings, only giving up two hits and not walking anyone.
Washington would make things interesting late, scoring one run in the eighth inning and two in the ninth.
With the tying run at the plate, Junior Cerda would strike out Billy Sullivan looking to give the Otters the series win.
The Otters are now 53-33, eclipsing their win total from 2023. Simpson retired 12 straight Wild Things between the second and fifth innings, holding the bottom eight in the order to an 0-for-17 in his start.
Evansville is now only three games back of Washington in the Central Division, the closest they have been since July 9. With the win, their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to nine.
The Otters look for their first road sweep of the season against the Wild Things tomorrow starting at 6:05 p.m. CT at EQT Park.
