RECAP | Otters sweep doubleheader, series over Gateway
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (49-32) won back-to-back one-run games against the Gateway Grizzlies (36-45) on Thursday night, taking both games of the doubleheader 3-2.
Ty Good was the starter for Gateway in game one against Evansville’s Garret Simpson.
Gateway brought in the first two runs of the day, scoring one in the first inning and one in the second to make it 2-0.
That lead was erased in the third inning with a two-run home run by T.J. Salvaggio, his 12th of the year and second in the series.
Both pitchers would settle down from there, with the bullpens throwing up zeroes until game one needed extra innings.
Junior Cerda came in for the eighth inning. With the commissioner’s runner on second base, he induced three groundouts and kept the game tied. Amani Jones brought in Salvaggio in the bottom half to walk off the Grizzlies in game one.
It was Ben Harris for Gateway against Chase Kriebel for the Otters in game two.
Evansville struck first in the third inning on an RBI double by Logan Brown.
Gateway took the lead on a two-run home run by Dale Thomas in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mark Black and Salvaggio led off with back-to-back singles. Two wild pitches brought in Black before Jon Ponder hit a sacrifice fly to give the Otters the lead.
Cerda got the seventh and converted on his 15th save of the year to confirm the sweep.
The Otters are now 49-32, winners of at least 48 games for the 14th time in franchise history. They are 17 games over .500 for the first time this season and have won their last six home games, tying their season-high.
The Otters look for their seventh straight home win in game one of three against the Lake Erie Crushers starting at 6:35 p.m. CT at EVSC’s Historic Bosse Field on Friday night.
