RECAP | Gonzalez's triple delivers Otters to series win
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (45-30) had a massive sixth inning to take the four-game series win from the Joliet Slammers (30-45) on Thursday night, 4-1.
Garret Simpson got the start against Ryan Daly, as both pitchers were dueling through the first five innings.
That was until Joliet would strike first in the sixth inning on a Jackson Valera RBI double to make it 1-0.
As the Otters have done all series, they responded immediately after the Slammers scored in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and two outs, Marcos Gonzalez hit one down the right field line, staying just fair for a triple as three runs would come in to give Evansville their first lead of the day.
Blake Robertson would immediately bring Gonzalez in with an RBI double, Robertson’s eighth RBI of the series.
The bullpen was dominant today off the backs of Joe Morrissey, Alex Valdez and Junior Cerda. They would face eleven Joliet hitters and strike out eight of them. Joe Morrissey faced four batters and struck them all out for a new season-high in an outing.
Junior Cerda got the ninth and slammed the door shut on the series, claiming his 14th save of the season with a 1-2-3 inning to give Evansville their third straight win.
Evansville is now 45-20, sitting at 15 games over .500 for the first time this season. Along with winning the four-game series against Joliet, they also take the season-series 5-4.
The Otters are back on the road tomorrow, game one of three against the Washington Wild Things starting at 6:05 p.m. CT at EQT Park.
