RECAP | Robertson leads Otters to doubleheader sweep over Joliet
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (44-30) rode great hitting to a doubleheader sweep against the Joliet Slammers (30-44) on Wednesday night, taking game one 8-3 and game two 6-3.
Colby Morse made his fourth professional start and put together another good one in game one with Eric Turner on the other side for Joliet.
Both teams traded runs in the first inning, with Amani Jones hitting a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
Evansville would end up scoring in all six offensive frames in the first game, bringing in one in the second inning then three in the third inning. A two-run home run by Blake Robertson and an RBI single by Sam Linscott put the Otters up by four.
Joliet scored in the fourth and the fifth innings but both times the Otters would immediately respond with a run of their own. T.J. Salvaggio hit the third Otters home run in the sixth and Robertson doubled in Marcos Gonzalez in the seventh.
Morse would go the distance, completing all seven innings on 111 pitches en route to his third straight victory.
Both teams would have a bullpen game in game two, Max Martzolf getting the start for Joliet and Chase Kriebel making his first professional start for Evansville.
Joliet brought two across in the first inning and Evansville took the lead back in the bottom half with three coming across on six hits.
Another Robertson home run made it 5-2 before he added his seventh RBI of the doubleheader in the sixth inning.
Junior Cerda would get his 13th save of the season in the top of the seventh after striking out Ivan Dahlberg to give the Otters the doubleheader sweep.
Robertson finished the twin bill with two home runs and seven RBI. Amani Jones and Marcos Gonzalez picked up four hits each and the offense as a whole had 28 hits.
Evansville is now 44-20, picking up its first wins of the season against Joliet at home.
The Otters play the series finale tomorrow against the Slammers starting at 6:35 p.m. CT at EVSC’s Historic Bosse Field. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. CT.
