RECAP | Early runs stifle Otters in game one defeat
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (42-30) dropped the opener of the four-game series against the Joliet Slammers (33-36) on Tuesday night, 11-5.
Ben Petschke took the rubber today against Gunnar Kines for Joliet.
Joliet took an early lead and never looked back, bringing in five runs in the second inning on six hits.
Gunnar Kines got through five scoreless to keep the lead. He would give up two runs to Evansville in the sixth inning on a two-run double by new signing Blake Barthol that took him out of the game.
Both teams would trade runs in the seventh inning before Joliet created more distance in the eighth.
The Otters would bring two more across in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded walk and a run-scoring double play.
Jake Carroll got the ninth and threw a scoreless frame to give Joliet the win.
The top four in the Otters lineup all had multi-hit games, with Barthol also grabbing two hits in his Otters debut.
The Otters and Slammers play two seven-inning games tomorrow to make up for the rainout back on June 25, game one starting at 5:05 p.m. CT at EVSC’s Historic Bosse Field. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. CT.
