RECAP | 2-3-4 hitters lead Otters to series finale victory
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters (40-27) got their 40th win of the season as they took the series finale against New York Boulders (39-31) on Thursday night, 6-1.
Colby Morse got the start for Evansville, his first since pitching seven scoreless innings last week in Mississippi. He took the bump opposite of Gabriel Barrett for the Boulders.
The Otters scored in the first inning for the sixth straight game, Marcos Gonzalez singling in Amani Jones to give Evansville an early lead.
New York would tie the game in the fourth inning, but that was all the offense the Boulders could muster up in game three.
Evansville scored two in the fifth to take the lead 3-1 while Morse was continuing his hot stretch, finishing with 6.1 innings and five strikeouts.
The bullpen would escape a couple of jams in the later frames. Anthony Tomczak came in with a runner on third and one out and stranded him. With the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, Junior Cerda made his return to the bullpen and left all three on base, keeping the two-run lead.
The Otters put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth inning, bringing in three runs, highlighted by Jones’ two-run triple. Cerda got the ninth as well and threw a 1-2-3 inning to give Evansville the win.
The 2-3-4 hitter combination of Jones, Logan Brown and Gonzalez went 10-15 and drove in all six runs for the Otters. Evansville’s 40th win of the season matches their win total from last season in 29 fewer games.
Evansville begins an important four-game weekend series tomorrow against the Windy City ThunderBolts at 6:35 p.m. CT at Ozinga Field.
