RELEASE | Smith named Frontier League pitcher of the week
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Frontier League announced on Monday afternoon that Otters starting pitcher Zach Smith has been named the Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 18-23.
The award follows the best start from an Evansville pitcher this year, as Smith threw nine shutout innings in a 14-strikeout complete game yesterday against the Windy City ThunderBolts. He only faced 33 batters and allowed no walks.
“It was great to see Zach dominate on the mound,” Otters pitching coach Max Peterson said. "This award is very well deserved and we couldn’t be more proud of Zach.”
Smith has made nine starts in 2024, clocking a 3.48 ERA – good for 11th best in the Frontier League. In 54.1 innings (most in the Frontier League), he has 53 strikeouts, which is 4th best among league leaders.
The righty is one of 18 pitchers in the league with a complete game this season. He joins fellow Otter Braden Scott, who had a seven-inning complete game on May 15 in the Otters’ home-opening double header.
Smith is also one of just six in the league this season with a shutout performance.
The nine-inning complete game shutout was the first one completed by an Otters since Tim Holdgrafer accomplished the feat last year on August 31st against the Gateway Grizzlies.
The Otters continue a three-game set with the Schaumburg Boomers at 6:35 p.m. CT and coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.
The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions.
The Otters play all home games at historic Bosse Field, located at 23 Don Mattingly Way in Evansville, Ind. Stay up to date with the Evansville Otters by visiting evansvilleotters.com, or follow the Otters on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
