Mattis makes return to Evansville
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters announced the signing of utility player Gary Mattis on Friday afternoon.
Mattis, from Broward County, Fla., will begin his second stint with Evansville in his career after spending parts of 2021 and 2022 with the Otters.
“We are excited to have Gary back in Evansville,” Otters Field Manager Andy McCauley said. “We know he will help keep us in a position to make a deep playoff run next month.”
After 19 games with Evansville in 2022, Mattis was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, whose affiliation he played in for the remainder of 2022. He clocked time in the Complex League, Low-A Visalia, High-A Hillsboro and Double-A Amarillo throughout the season.
The signing came after a red-hot start to Mattis’ 2022 campaign, where he hit .260 with three home runs, 16 RBIs and stole 17 bags in just 19 games. On top of the stats, Mattis made impressive plays at second base regularly.
In two seasons with Evansville, Mattis has hit for a .282 average, with 35 RBIs and 39 stolen bases.
Mattis will make his 2023 Otters debut tonight, batting leadoff and playing second base.
The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions.
The Otters play all home games at historic Bosse Field, located at 23 Don Mattingly Way in Evansville, Ind. Stay up-to-date with the Evansville Otters by visiting evansvilleotters.com, or follow the Otters on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
