The game was scoreless over the first 3 1/2 innings as both teams had opportunities to score but each starting pitcher squashed a few rallies.
Evansville loaded the bases in the first against right-hander Brandon Mathes but the pitcher induced an inning-ending double play to keep the game scoreless. Evansville left-hander
Garrett Bullock also worked around some early jams with key defensive plays including a pickoff of John Malloy in the third inning.
Florence burst through in the fourth inning, batting around to score nine runs against three different pitchers. The Freedom would add another five runs in the seventh, as Mathes also threw a complete game shutout in the 14-0 win.
Mathes (1-0) earns the win as Bullock (3-6) takes the loss.
The teams will meet again tomorrow at the Home of the Florence Freedom for a split doubleheader of two games lasting at least seven innings.
The first game will begin at 1:05 p.m. EDT as lefthander
