(SAUGET, Illinois) – The
Gateway Grizzlies tied the game in the 7th and won the Wednesday night contest against the
Evansville Otters, 4-3, with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Evansville was down by two runs early with an RBI single from Jerod Yakubik and a run-producing double from outfielder Jon Myers.
Trailing 2-0, the Otters rallied back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Designated hitter
Brett Chamberlain brought home a run with an infield single and catcher
Bubba Garcia helped Evansville take the lead with a looping, two-run single to right field.
After Gateway scored early, they were unable to tally runs the rest of the night against Evansville right-hander
Dan Blewett. The pitcher retired 10 batters in a row at one point and threw four shutout innings to end his evening.
Down 3-2, Gateway tied the game against reliever
Tyree Hayes in the seventh. DH Sam Mahoney hit a solo home run to right field, evening the score up at three and it was the first professional home run for the rookie.
The game would then remain tied at three in to the bottom of the ninth inning. The Grizzlies utilized a leadoff walk and a fielding error to put two men on base with no one out. Following a sacrifice bunt, John Shelby hit a long sacrifice fly ball to center field that scored the winning run in a 4-3 walk-off win for Gateway.
Both teams have now won a game in this series and have identical records at 5-6.
Reliever Paul Tremlin (1-0) earns the win for Gateway, throwing 1 2/3 hitless innings. The loss goes to Evansville reliever Dan Marcacci (0-1) after allowing one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings.
Evansville and Gateway will meet in the series finale tomorrow night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. as lefty
Matt Crim (0-1, 3.18 earned run average) starts for the Otters and righty Tim Brown (1-1, 0.00 ERA) takes the hill for the Grizzlies.
