(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) – Rookie outfielder Luis Uribe signed with the Evansville Otters on Tuesday morning.
Uribe played his college baseball at Oklahoma State University where he hit .310 last spring with four home runs and 29 runs batted in. But when a call didn’t come for Uribe in the MLB draft, the Boston native held out hope for another opportunity.
“I am really hungry to play,” Uribe said. “I wasn’t drafted last year and I am happy to come here and play. I have to show what I got.”
After beginning at Endicott College in Massachusettes, Uribe transferred to Oklahoma State where he played the last two seasons. In 2010, Uribe’s batting average was at .300 or better in 46 of the games he played.
“Luis comes highly recommended to us,” said manager Andy McCauley. “We are looking for him to come in and compete for an outfield position. We are looking forward to seeing what he can do in spring training.”
Uribe will join Alex Foltz, Greg Alexander, Jamar Walton, and Troy Frazier in the Evansville outfield.
The Otters also released utility man Jared Jordan this afternoon.
Opening Day for the Otters at historic Bosse Field is Friday, May 18, 2012, when Evansville hosts the Washington Wild Things. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT, and season tickets are on sale now.
