The Evansville Otters have recently inked pitchers Jacob Jones and Michael Kellar and outfielder Carlos Romero.
A native of Griffin, Ga., Jones completed his collegiate career at Centre College in 2009. In four years, Jones compiled a 4.67 earned run average, including an ERA under four (3.97 in 2008, and 3.88 in 2009) in both his junior and senior seasons. He won nine games in 34 career appearances with six complete games and one shutout. In addition to his success on the mound, Jones also served as a full-time player in the Colonels’ lineup, hitting .326 for his career with 13 home runs and 123 runs batted in. During his time at Centre, Jones earned all-conference honors at three different positions, including as a third baseman in 2007 and a designated hitter in 2008; in 2009, he was a first team selection as a pitcher.
Also joining the Otters in 2010 will be Niagara University ace hurler Michael Kellar. Kellar started his collegiate career in 2006 at Lake Land Junior College before joining the Niagara University’s pitching squad in 2008. To conclude his collegiate career, Kellar compiled a 2009 record of 6 – 4 with an ERA of 4.88 in 13 games. In 75.2 innings pitched, Kellar struck out 50 while walking 42. Kellar earned All-MAAC honors as he was named First Team All-MAAC.Kellar posted a 6-1 record in MAAC action. Overall in conference play, Kellar boasted a 3.56 earned-run average with 37 strikeouts to just 28 walks in 55.2 innings pitched.
Outfielder Carlos Romero from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, will join the Otters after spending four years at the University of Mobile. In 55 games for the Rams, Romero compiled a batting average of .374 during his senior year in 2009. In 190 at bats, Romero finished with 71 hits, including 15 home runs, scoring 66 runs. Topping the Rams’ roster in slugging percentage was Romero with a slugging percentage of .726.
